9/11 Reunited: National Geographic Revisits the Human Stories Behind September 11
New three-part docuseries brings survivors, first responders and the people who helped them back together 25 years later
Johannesburg, 18 August 2026 — Some of the most powerful stories surrounding September 11, 2001 are not only about the tragedy itself, but about the extraordinary human connections that emerged in the middle of unimaginable chaos.
National Geographic is set to explore those connections in “9/11 Reunited,” a new three-part docuseries that follows survivors, first responders and witnesses as they reunite with the strangers, rescuers and everyday heroes who changed — and in some cases saved — their lives on September 11.
The series premieres on National Geographic on Tuesday, 25 August 2026 at 20:30, with all three episodes airing back-to-back. South African viewers will also be able to stream the series on Disney+.
Twenty-five years later
Created in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, “9/11 Reunited” comes from the Emmy Award-winning team at 72 Films.
The series revisits the attacks through the personal relationships formed during the events of that day, focusing on people whose lives intersected during moments of extraordinary danger and uncertainty.
For many of those featured, the reunions represent the first time they have seen the people who played a significant role in their survival or experience of September 11 in 25 years.
These encounters provide an opportunity to revisit questions that have remained unanswered, express gratitude and reflect on memories that have continued to shape their lives.
Rather than focusing solely on the historical events, the series places human connection at the centre of its storytelling.
Stories of courage and survival
Across its three episodes, “9/11 Reunited” brings together people from different sides of the events — including survivors, first responders and witnesses — whose paths crossed during the attacks.
Some reunions connect survivors with rescuers. Others bring together people who offered assistance during the confusion and devastation of the day.
The result is a collection of deeply personal stories about courage, compassion and the lasting impact of brief encounters.
For those involved, meeting again after a quarter of a century offers an opportunity to understand what happened from another perspective and to consider how a single moment can alter the course of a person’s life.

A major digital archive is also coming
The docuseries will be accompanied by an extensive digital storytelling project planned for early September.
National Geographic says the digital experience will bring together an archive of previously unseen footage, exclusive interviews and original source material from its collection of September 11 documentaries.
The searchable archive, which will be available through NatGeo.com, will allow audiences to explore eyewitness testimony and the aftermath of September 11 through multiple perspectives.
The project is designed to provide additional historical context while allowing audiences to engage with firsthand accounts.
National Geographic will also publish a companion digital feature by September 11 historian Garrett M. Graff, examining the pivotal 17-minute period between the first and second plane impacts at the World Trade Center.
The feature will use a minute-by-minute narrative to provide additional context around one of the defining moments of the attacks.
Remembering through the Tribute in Light
The digital programme will also include original reportage on the annual Tribute in Light, the public art installation held on September 11 in remembrance of those who lost their lives.
National Geographic is working with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum on the feature, which will include exclusive photography of this year’s installation by architectural photographer Christopher Payne.
Together, the documentary and digital projects aim to examine September 11 not only through historical records, but through the people who experienced its consequences and carried those memories forward.
When to watch “9/11 Reunited” in South Africa
South African viewers can watch the three-part docuseries on National Geographic via DStv channel 181 and StarTimes channel 220.
The three episodes will air back-to-back on Tuesday, 25 August 2026 at 20:30.
The series will also be available to stream on Disney+ in South Africa.
“9/11 Reunited” executive producers include David Glover and Mark Raphael of 72 Films, alongside Academy Award winners Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin. Louis Lee Ray serves as producer, while Julian Jones directs the series for 72 Films. For National Geographic, Cate Hall and Carolyn Payne serve as executive producers.
