SASSA Gold Cards: Beneficiaries urged to switch to Postbank Black Cards as deadline arrives
South African social grant beneficiaries still using SASSA Gold Cards are being urged to complete the switch to Postbank Black Cards as the 31 August 2026 migration deadline arrives.
Postbank has warned that the old Gold Cards are no longer operational for beneficiaries who have not completed the migration process. While grant payments will continue to be made into beneficiaries’ accounts, those who have not switched may be unable to access their funds until they obtain a new Postbank Black Card.
The deadline comes as thousands of beneficiaries across the country continue to make the transition from the outgoing Gold Cards to the new Black Cards.
What happens if you miss the deadline?
Postbank says beneficiaries who are unable to complete the migration by 31 August will not lose their social grants. Their grant payments will continue to be deposited into their accounts.
However, they will not be able to access those funds using the old Gold Card. Beneficiaries will first need to complete the card replacement process and receive their Postbank Black Card before they can access the money.
Postbank has confirmed that card replacement sites will remain available after the deadline to assist beneficiaries who still need to migrate.
The bank is encouraging anyone who has not yet made the switch to visit a replacement site as soon as possible rather than waiting until their next grant payment date.
Where can beneficiaries get the new card?
Postbank Black Cards are available at selected card replacement sites located at participating retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores.
Beneficiaries can use their mobile phones to locate their nearest replacement site by dialling *120*355#.
The replacement process is free of charge. Beneficiaries need to take a valid South African identity document or a temporary identity document with them.
Postbank has also stressed that beneficiaries do not need to visit a SASSA office to complete the migration. Once the new card has been issued, it is activated immediately.
Beneficiaries urged to remain alert
The card migration has also prompted warnings about possible scams targeting grant beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries should use only authorised Postbank card replacement sites and should not pay anyone to replace their card. Postbank has previously warned that beneficiaries should be cautious of people offering unofficial card replacement services.
The urgency surrounding the deadline has also raised concerns about beneficiaries who may face difficulties travelling to replacement sites or standing in long queues. Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development recently called for urgent intervention and greater clarity around assistance for vulnerable beneficiaries, including older people and people with disabilities.
What beneficiaries need to remember
For those still using a SASSA Gold Card, the key message is not to delay the switch.
The new Postbank Black Card is intended to continue providing access to social grant payments, while the migration allows beneficiaries to move away from the outgoing Gold Card system.
Beneficiaries who have missed the 31 August deadline should not assume that their grant has been cancelled. Instead, they should visit the nearest authorised Postbank card replacement site as soon as possible to complete the migration and restore access to their funds.
