The Source Collective Brings a New Era of Immersive Afro Tech to Johannesburg
Johannesburg is set to experience electronic music in a whole new way when The Source Collective arrives at Sognage on Friday, 9 October 2026, promising an immersive audiovisual experience that goes far beyond the traditional DJ set.
Positioned as an ambitious new addition to Johannesburg’s electronic music landscape, The Source Collective Johannesburg brings together music, cinematic visuals, lighting, storytelling and production design to create a fully immersive experience where every performance becomes its own evolving journey.
More Than a Night of Music
The Source Collective is built around a simple but powerful idea: music can do more than entertain.
It can connect people, inspire new perspectives, create friendships and produce memories that remain long after the final track has played.
Rather than presenting artists against repetitive visual backdrops, the event has been designed around original audiovisual narratives. Each performance will unfold as a cinematic experience, with music, visuals, lighting and production evolving together throughout the artist’s set.
The result is intended to feel less like watching a conventional DJ performance and more like stepping inside a living story.
Where Music, Storytelling and Technology Meet
The concept behind The Source Collective was born from two complementary ideas: pushing the creative boundaries of live electronic music while creating an environment where people can genuinely connect.
The event draws inspiration from the origins of music, rhythm, storytelling and human connection — returning to something authentic in an increasingly distracted world.
The word “Collective” reflects the central role of community in the project.
Artists, creatives, audiences and partners are all part of the experience, contributing to something designed to be greater than any single individual.
Guests can expect carefully curated sounds spanning Afro House, Afro Tech, Deep House and melodic electronic music, with a lineup of artists selected for their authenticity, musical depth and ability to create emotional musical journeys.
Every Artist Gets Their Own Cinematic World
One of the defining elements of The Source Collective will be the way each artist’s performance is presented.
Instead of relying on generic visual loops, each set will be supported by a custom-designed audiovisual story. Visuals, lighting and production will evolve alongside the music, creating a distinct atmosphere around every performance.
The DJ lineup is expected to be announced soon, with each artist set to perform within a carefully crafted visual and musical narrative.
This approach aims to transform the relationship between performer and audience — creating an experience that audiences don’t simply watch, but feel.
Building a Community Through Music
At the heart of The Source Collective is the desire to build a community around creativity, curiosity, respect and meaningful experiences.
The organisers envision a space where strangers can become friends, where music becomes a shared language and where audiences leave feeling inspired not only by the artists, but also by the people they encountered throughout the night.
For The Source Collective, the experience is therefore about more than the production on stage.
It is about what happens between people.
Johannesburg’s Growing Afro Tech Culture
Johannesburg has established itself as an influential hub for African electronic music, with Afro House and Afro Tech continuing to attract audiences both locally and internationally.
The Source Collective aims to contribute to this evolving musical landscape by introducing a new approach to live electronic music — one that combines South Africa’s rich musical identity with ambitious audiovisual production and storytelling.
The organisers hope the inaugural event will become the beginning of a much larger vision for immersive music experiences in Johannesburg and beyond.
‘This Is Only the Beginning’
Speaking about the vision behind the project, The Source Collective Founder Zach Sher says the concept began with a belief in the transformative power of music.
“The Source Collective began with a simple belief that music has the power to do more than entertain. It has the power to move people, connect strangers and create moments that stay with us long after the night is over.”
Sher says the project aims to transform traditional DJ performances into cinematic audiovisual journeys while creating an environment where audiences leave with something they did not have when they arrived.
He describes the inaugural event as the starting point of a much bigger vision and invites audiences to experience the beginning of that journey.
