The Blooming Journey of Rosebank’s Floral Visionary
How Grant Donson turned a lifelong passion for flowers into a flourishing Rosebank business

Johannesburg, 17 August 2026 — Rosebank is known for its energy, style and ever-changing mix of places to shop, meet and unwind. At The Zone @ Rosebank, that sense of creativity extends into a floral boutique where flowers have become more than beautiful arrangements — they are the centrepiece of a growing entrepreneurial story.
At the helm of Flowers by Grant Donson is florist and entrepreneur Grant Donson, whose relationship with flowers began when he was just 14 years old in Plettenberg Bay.
Growing up surrounded by flowers, Donson began learning the craft of floristry from an early age. He later spent time in Cape Town learning from experienced floral specialists before moving to Johannesburg, where he worked for another florist while developing his own business on the side.
His first entrepreneurial steps were modest but ambitious. Donson began selling flower arrangements to busy executives from a pop-up shop outside a local gym. The concept attracted the attention of passers-by and, driven by his passion and determination, he continued building his customer base.
In 2017, he took the leap into full-time entrepreneurship and formally registered his business.
From florist to business owner
A significant turning point came when Donson completed the Management Essentials course at WITS Business School.
The experience gave him an opportunity to strengthen the business side of his creative talent, developing his knowledge of business development, analysis, financial management, marketing and social media strategy.
With these skills added to his experience as a florist, Donson was able to approach the growth of his business with a clearer commercial strategy.
Then came an opportunity that would take Flowers by Grant Donson to another level.
A little over two years ago, Donson was approached by the centre management team at The Zone @ Rosebank. He seized the opportunity to establish a fully-fledged florist in the popular shopping and lifestyle destination.
The move placed the business in front of an upmarket clientele while giving Donson a permanent space in which to showcase his creativity.
A floral experience in the heart of Rosebank
Walking into Flowers by Grant Donson is designed to be an experience in itself.
The boutique combines contemporary décor with soft, ambient lighting and an ever-changing display of flowers. Premium roses, exotic orchids, seasonal blooms and more elaborate couture-style creations form part of a collection that showcases both variety and artistry.
The arrangements are designed to make an impression, with shoppers often stopping to admire the displays as they move through the store.
For Donson, staying relevant means constantly following floral trends while continuing to push creative boundaries.
That approach appears to have paid off.
From pop-up shop to growing client base
Flowers by Grant Donson’s client base has expanded significantly since those early days outside the gym.
Today, the business works with major corporate clients, event-planning partners and individual customers who have returned repeatedly for its distinctive floral creations.
The Rosebank store has also become a destination for regular visitors who enjoy seeing the displays evolve and discovering something new each time they visit.
For a business built around creativity, that ability to continually reinvent the experience has become part of its appeal.
Passion remains at the centre
Despite the growth, Donson says his motivation remains rooted in the same passion that inspired him when he first began working with flowers as a teenager.
“I have never looked back because I am doing what I love and on my own terms. It is food for my soul and my flamboyant floral creations!”
He says his aim is to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity while remaining responsive to what his clients want.
Donson also credits Old Mutual Property for helping make the next stage of his business journey possible.
From a teenager learning the fundamentals of floristry in Plettenberg Bay, to a young entrepreneur selling arrangements from a pop-up shop, and ultimately to the owner of an established floral boutique in Rosebank, his journey is a reminder that creative passion can become a viable business when it is paired with determination, learning and a willingness to take calculated risks.
And in a part of Johannesburg where style and creativity are part of everyday life, Flowers by Grant Donson has found a fitting place to bloom.
