More than 100 transport operators, logistics professionals, customers and industry partners recently gathered at Umhlali Country Club in Ballito for Scania South Africa’s annual KwaZulu-Natal Golf Day, an event that blended networking with meaningful conversations about the future of freight and fleet management.

While the golf course provided the setting, the real focus was on the challenges and opportunities facing one of South Africa’s most important industries.

Keeping South Africa Moving

KwaZulu-Natal remains one of the country’s most strategic logistics hubs, connecting the Port of Durban to major industrial, agricultural and commercial markets nationwide.

According to Gary Boucher, Dealer Director for Scania KwaZulu-Natal, today’s transport operators face increasing pressure to maximise uptime, reduce operating costs and improve long-term fleet performance.

“Our customers operate in an environment where reliability, uptime and long-term vehicle performance are essential to their success,” Boucher said.

He added that bringing industry stakeholders together creates valuable opportunities to discuss real-world challenges while strengthening relationships across the transport value chain.

Technology Driving the Next Generation of Freight

One of the highlights of the event was the showcase of the Scania Super powertrain, the company’s most fuel-efficient internal combustion platform to date.

Designed for demanding long-distance transport operations, the 13-litre Scania Super engine delivers:

  • Up to 8% better fuel efficiency
  • Nearly 50% brake thermal efficiency
  • Engine durability of up to two million kilometres
  • Lower total cost of ownership for fleet operators

Guests also explored innovations including Scania’s latest Opticruise gearbox, modular chassis design and upgraded rear axle technology, all aimed at improving productivity and reducing operating costs.

More Than Buying a Truck

For Scania, the conversation has shifted beyond vehicle sales.

According to Roberto Izaaks, Regional Sales Manager for Scania Southern Africa, today’s customers want solutions that improve business performance over the long term.

“The conversation is no longer only about purchasing a truck,” he explained.

“It’s about understanding how every engineering improvement contributes to productivity, reliability and long-term business performance.”

He added that events such as the KZN Golf Day allow operators to see how new technologies perform in real operating environments rather than simply reading specifications on paper.

Celebrating Industry Excellence

The day concluded with a prize-giving ceremony recognising standout performances on the golf course.

Among the winners were:

  • Winning Fourball: Team 12
  • Runner-up Fourball: Team 10
  • Closest to the Pin: Greg Marshall and Kamaya Moodliar
  • Sustainability Hole Winner: Siva Padayachee
  • Connected Hole Winner: Cargo Move
  • Scania Super Hole Winner: Darren from Kimeshans

Lucky draw prizes were also awarded to Jude Reddy, Sameer Manohar and Rishie Latchminarain.

Building the Future Together

As South Africa’s logistics landscape continues to evolve, Scania believes collaboration will remain one of the industry’s greatest competitive advantages.

Closing the event, Boucher emphasised the importance of staying connected with customers as the transport sector navigates changing operating conditions, new technologies and growing business demands.

“The transport industry is changing faster than it has in many years,” he said.

“Staying close to our customers helps us understand their challenges, identify opportunities and continue delivering solutions that create real value.”

With innovation, sustainability and stronger partnerships driving the conversation, Scania’s annual KZN Golf Day demonstrated that the future of freight is about far more than trucks—it’s about the people and businesses working together to keep South Africa moving.
