When Rest Is Not Enough: Safe Energy Activation Comes to South Africa

Safe Energy Activation South Africa sessions are coming to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Hout Bay and the Garden Route, as international transformational facilitator Irena Kovaljukova brings her wellbeing practice to the country.

There is tired, and then there is the kind of exhaustion that an early night, a quiet weekend or another attempt to โ€œswitch offโ€ does not seem to touch.

You go to work. You answer the messages. You meet the deadlines. You take care of the people around you. You keep showing up.

Yet underneath all that productivity can sit a persistent sense of exhaustion, mental overload or disconnection.

For people who have become accustomed to simply pushing through, the question can eventually become: what happens when rest does not seem to be enough?

That is the conversation behind Kovaljukovaโ€™s first South African tour, which brings her Safe Energy Activation (SEA) work to wellness spaces and studios around the country.

When burnout still looks productive

Burnout does not always look like someone who has completely stopped functioning.

Sometimes, it looks like someone who is still doing everything โ€” but running increasingly low on energy while doing it.

Kovaljukova says modern life has made many people exceptionally good at functioning despite how they feel.

โ€œWe have become incredibly good at functioning,โ€ she says. โ€œWe work, take care of people, meet deadlines and keep moving. But being able to function does not necessarily mean that we feel connected, energised or fulfilled.โ€

Kovaljukova understands the high-performance cycle personally.

Before moving into transformational work, she built an international corporate career, including senior leadership roles and managing teams of more than 200 people. According to her own account, outward professional success eventually sat alongside an increasing feeling of internal disconnection and burnout.

Her search for a different way of working with herself led her into the study and practice of human behaviour, body awareness, consciousness, emotional patterns and energy work.

Her professional journey has since evolved into her own Safe Energy Activation Academy, which she describes as a method built around safe and structured energy work.

What is Safe Energy Activation?

Safe Energy Activation, or SEA, is presented as a facilitated body-based wellbeing practice.

During a group session, participants lie comfortably while music forms part of the experience. Kovaljukova facilitates the room and works with participants throughout the session.

There is no sequence of yoga poses to follow, and participants do not need previous experience with meditation or energy work.

Instead, participants are invited to relax and notice what arises naturally.

That experience can be different for everyone.

Some people may remain completely still. Others may notice changes in breathing, warmth, tingling, spontaneous stretching or gentle movement. Emotion may surface, while others may experience a period of deep stillness and relaxation.

There is no particular reaction participants are expected to produce.

โ€œYour body may move. Your emotions may surface. You may experience profound stillness. You may notice sensations you would normally pass over,โ€ says Kovaljukova. โ€œThere is no performance and there is no right experience.โ€

The organiser describes the approach as combining energy work with elements including nervous-system regulation, psychology and a trauma-informed approach.

A different approach to slowing down

The appeal of experiences like this comes at a time when conversations around burnout are moving beyond the familiar advice to simply sleep more, take a holiday or become better at managing time.

Those things can help, but for someone who has spent months or years operating under sustained pressure, actually slowing down can be surprisingly difficult.

A facilitated session creates a defined period in which there is nothing to achieve, produce or perform.

The focus is instead on noticing.

That does not mean the experience is being presented as a medical or psychological treatment. Safe Energy Activation is a wellbeing practice, and individual experiences can vary.

For anyone dealing with persistent exhaustion or symptoms that are affecting their health or daily life, professional medical or psychological support remains important.

The SEA sessions offer something different: an opportunity to step out of the normal rhythm of work, responsibilities and constant stimulation and spend time paying attention to the body and internal experience.

What happens in a private session?

Alongside group experiences, Kovaljukova is offering a limited number of private one-on-one and small-group sessions during her South African tour.

According to the tour information, private sessions are adapted to the individual and can involve the participant lying comfortably while Kovaljukova observes physical and energetic responses.

The work is not presented as massage or conventional physical manipulation. Depending on the session, there may be very light touch or no touch at all.

Participants may experience changes in breathing, warmth, tingling, spontaneous movement, emotional expression or periods of stillness.

Again, there is no predetermined response that a participant is expected to achieve.

More than a tour: SEA Academy

Kovaljukova’s work extends beyond individual sessions.

She is also the founder of SEA Academy, which aims to train facilitators to work with energy in a structured and safety-focused way.

The academy says its approach places emphasis on safety, clear structure and respect for the body, mind and space.

The South African programme also includes a planned five-day facilitator training from 12โ€“16 October 2026, according to the current South Africa tour information.

The bigger conversation around burnout

Perhaps the most interesting part of the South African tour is not the idea that one particular practice can solve exhaustion.

It is the growing recognition that constantly functioning is not necessarily the same thing as feeling well.

People can be productive and depleted at the same time.

They can be successful and disconnected.

They can take a weekend off and still find it difficult to switch off.

For those people, the value of a practice such as Safe Energy Activation may simply be the opportunity to pause and pay attention.

Not another productivity hack.

Not another item on the self-care checklist.

Just a little space to notice what is happening beneath the noise.

And sometimes, that may be where the conversation about feeling better begins.
