Orlando Pirates Storm Into Fifth Consecutive MTN8 Final

Orlando Pirates have booked their place in a fifth consecutive MTN8 final after beating Sekhukhune United 3–0 at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, completing a commanding 4–0 aggregate victory.

The Buccaneers entered the second leg with a narrow 1–0 advantage from last weekend’s first meeting in Polokwane, but produced a much stronger attacking display on home soil to put the tie beyond doubt.

Thapelo Mokobodi and Gamphani Lungu scored before half-time, while Kamogelo Sebelebele added a third in stoppage time to seal another memorable night for the Soweto giants.

Pirates Take Control Before Half-Time

Pirates started the match with attacking intent, although Sekhukhune initially managed to frustrate the hosts.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute.

Yanela Mbuthuma played a key role in the move, bursting forward down the left before finding Thapelo Mokobodi, who made no mistake from close range.

The goal gave Pirates the momentum they had been searching for.

They would not have to wait long for a second.

Just six minutes before the interval, Mbuthuma again found himself at the centre of the action. After receiving a pass from Oswin Appollis, he calmly created the opportunity for Gamphani Lungu, who did the rest to give Pirates a 2–0 lead.

With Pirates now 3–0 ahead on aggregate, Sekhukhune faced a huge challenge in the second half.

The visitors came out with greater urgency after the break and began putting pressure on the Pirates defence.

Sipho Chaine was called upon to deal with several dangerous deliveries into his penalty area, while Sbangani Zulu produced an important defensive intervention to deny Bright Ndlovu in the 70th minute.

For a spell, Sekhukhune appeared capable of finding a way back into the contest.

But Pirates remained composed.

Having already established a commanding advantage over the two legs, the Buccaneers were able to manage the game and gradually regain control as the second half progressed.

Sebelebele Adds the Finishing Touch

With Sekhukhune needing goals and pushing forward, spaces began to open up.

Pirates took full advantage in the closing stages.

Substitute Tshepang Moremi helped create the opportunity for Kamogelo Sebelebele, who finished from inside the box in the final moments of the match.

The third goal completed a 3–0 victory on the afternoon and a 4–0 aggregate triumph.

The result also completed an impressive hat-trick of victories over Sekhukhune in the space of just eight days, with Pirates winning all three matches without conceding a goal.

History Made by the Buccaneers

The victory means Pirates have become the first club to reach the MTN8 final five consecutive times.

It is another remarkable achievement for a club that has dominated the competition in recent seasons.

The Buccaneers are now just one match away from another MTN8 title and will face either Mamelodi Sundowns or Lamontville Golden Arrows in the final.

That final opponent will be determined after the remaining semi-final is decided on Sunday.

Mbuthuma Makes His Mark

One of the standout performers was Yanela Mbuthuma, who played a direct role in both first-half goals.

The forward provided the assists for Mokobodi and Lungu, helping Pirates establish the advantage that ultimately proved decisive.

For Mbuthuma, the performance comes after a period in which he has faced criticism from sections of the Pirates support.

His contribution on Saturday provided a timely response and demonstrated the attacking quality he can offer the Buccaneers.

Pirates can now turn their attention towards the MTN8 final with confidence.
