Can This Plettenberg Bay Supermarket Make South African Retail History?
KWIKSPAR Beacon Isle Eyes Unprecedented Third National Store of the Year Title

PLETTENBERG BAY – Winning one national retail award is an achievement. Winning two is exceptional. But KWIKSPAR Beacon Isle is now chasing something no other store in South Africa has ever accomplished—a historic third National KWIKSPAR of the Year title.
Nestled along the scenic Garden Route, the award-winning supermarket has quietly become one of the country’s biggest retail success stories, collecting seven regional awards and two national titles over the past nine years. Now, owner Duncan Brown and his passionate team are preparing for another shot at making history when the national winners are announced at the SPAR Convention in September.
A Retail Formula That Breaks the Rules
For Brown, success has never come from following industry trends—it comes from setting them.
Rather than simply stocking shelves, he believes retail is about creating experiences that surprise and delight customers every time they visit.
“You have to keep reinvesting and reinventing yourself,” Brown explains. “We don’t sit back. We’re always thinking of something new.”
That philosophy has transformed KWIKSPAR Beacon Isle into far more than a neighbourhood supermarket.
More Than Just Groceries
Walk into the store today and you’ll find much more than everyday essentials.
From colourful poké bowls inspired by Hawaiian cuisine to the latest additions—a focaccia bar and freshly prepared ramen bowls—the supermarket continues to introduce food concepts rarely associated with traditional grocery stores.
For Brown, keeping customers curious is part of the business model.
“If you don’t love food, you can’t be in retail,” he says.
His passion extends well beyond the boardroom. Brown still experiments with recipes at home before introducing them in-store, personally working with managers to perfect every dish before it reaches customers.
Innovation That Keeps Customers Coming Back
Innovation has become a hallmark of the Beacon Isle shopping experience.
Over the years, the store has expanded its in-house bakery, upgraded its coffee shop with comfortable lounge seating and an outdoor deck, and continually invested in the latest refrigeration and retail technology.
Those investments have paid off.
In 2025, the store’s Bean Tree Coffee Shop was crowned the best in South Africa after outperforming every other Bean Tree outlet nationwide, reportedly selling four times more coffee than its nearest competitor.
Success Starts Behind the Scenes
While customers notice the fresh displays and welcoming atmosphere, Brown believes excellence begins where shoppers rarely look.
Cleanliness, organisation and meticulous merchandising remain non-negotiable.
“Our standards have always been incredibly high,” he says. “Everything has its place, and even our back areas need to reflect the same standard of excellence.”
That attention to detail has helped build customer trust and maintain the store’s award-winning reputation.
The Team Behind the Success
Behind every successful retailer is a dedicated team, and Brown credits much of the supermarket’s success to employees who have become familiar faces in the local community.
Nearly half of the staff have worked at the store for more than ten years, building lasting relationships with loyal customers who appreciate the personalised service and welcoming atmosphere.
It’s this consistency that has helped transform routine grocery shopping into a genuine community experience.
A Family Legacy in the Making
As Brown looks toward another potential national title, the journey has become even more personal.
Earlier this year, his daughter Caitlyn Brown joined the family business, bringing fresh energy and a keen eye for detail.
Brown says she has already impressed him with her commitment to maintaining the high standards that have become synonymous with the store.
“She’s got my eye for neatness and cleanliness,” he says proudly.
Whether the supermarket secures its historic third national title or not, one thing is certain: KWIKSPAR Beacon Isle has already redefined what modern South African retail can look like.
And if history is made this September, it will be the result of years of innovation, relentless consistency and a commitment to putting customers at the heart of everything they do.
