Tatjana Smith is returning to competitive swimming, with the four-time Olympic medallist entered to compete at the South African Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg from 24 to 27 September 2026.

Smith retired from competition following the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won gold in the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 200m breaststroke. Her return will see her represent her new Stellenbosch-based team, Lane Leader.

Swimming South Africa confirmed the comeback on Wednesday, saying interest in the championships had grown significantly following news of Smith’s return.

Dean Price, Swimming South Africa’s Head of High Performance, welcomed the development and said Smith could add value both in individual events and relays.

The comeback marks Smith’s first competitive appearance since the Paris Games.

A Champion’s Olympic Legacy

Smith has built one of the most decorated swimming careers in South African sport.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she won gold in the 200m breaststroke and silver in the 100m.

Three years later at Paris 2024, she again reached the Olympic podium, winning gold in the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 200m.

She also won a world championship title in the 200m breaststroke in 2023.

Swimming South Africa’s records from the Paris Games list Smith as South Africa’s standout swimmer, with gold in the 100m and silver in the 200m breaststroke.

Her decision to step away from competitive swimming after Paris therefore marked the end of a remarkable Olympic chapter.

Now, the pool beckons again.

Why Is Tatjana Smith Coming Back?

Smith’s return does not necessarily signal a full-time return to the international swimming circuit.

Her appearance at the Pietermaritzburg championships will provide an opportunity to race again and assess where she is competitively.

The event is also an important part of South Africa’s preparations for the World Aquatics World Short Course Championships in Beijing in December.

Short-course swimming is contested in a 25-metre pool, rather than the 50-metre Olympic pool.

That creates a different racing environment, with swimmers making more turns and underwater transitions during an event.

Smith’s return therefore comes at an interesting point in her post-Olympic career.

A New Team and a New Chapter

Smith is now training with Lane Leader, a Stellenbosch-based swimming team.

Her presence adds significant experience to a group of swimmers preparing for the national championships and potentially the international short-course season.

Swimming South Africa says the championships will feature a number of the country’s leading swimmers, with Smith’s return adding further attention to the event.

The competition will also feature other established South African names, making the four-day meeting an important fixture on the domestic swimming calendar.

South Africa Gets Another Look at an Olympic Champion

For South African swimming, Smith’s return provides an intriguing moment.

She left the sport after reaching the highest level possible at the Paris Olympics. More than two years later, she is preparing to race again โ€” this time without the immediate pressure of an Olympic qualification campaign hanging over the event.

Whether the return becomes a longer competitive chapter or remains a limited comeback, her presence in Pietermaritzburg will give local fans an opportunity to see one of South Africa’s most successful Olympians back where she made her name.

And for anyone who watched her produce those unforgettable breaststroke performances in Tokyo and Paris, seeing Tatjana Smith back behind the blocks will be a moment worth watching.

The South African Short Course Championships run from 24 to 27 September in Pietermaritzburg.
