Shoprite Expands Beyond Groceries With Vida e Caffè and R&A Cellular Deals

Shoprite is making a significant move beyond traditional grocery retail after announcing two strategic acquisitions that will expand its presence in coffee, quick-service restaurants, payments and technology.

The retailer announced plans to acquire 100% of Vida e Caffè, the South African coffee chain with approximately 400 corporate and franchise outlets. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval.

Shoprite has also acquired an initial 51% stake in R&A Cellular, a South African technology and payments business serving informal and semi-formal retailers.

The moves come as Shoprite continues to strengthen its position across the South African and broader African consumer market.

The company’s latest annual results show merchandise sales from continuing operations increased by 7.2% to R270.8 billion for the 52 weeks ended 28 June 2026.

The Vida e Caffè acquisition gives Shoprite access to a well-established coffee and convenience network, while R&A Cellular provides technology that enables micro-retailers to offer financial and other everyday services.

Shoprite says both transactions reflect a strategy of selectively acquiring businesses where specialist expertise, capacity or speed to market can strengthen the group’s existing platforms.

The expansion is significant because South Africa’s retail landscape is increasingly being shaped by convenience, digital payments and consumers’ demand for services that can be accessed quickly and close to home.

Vida e Caffè’s footprint also gives Shoprite an opportunity to participate more deeply in the growing coffee and on-the-go consumption market.

For South African businesses, the development highlights the importance of diversification. Large companies are increasingly looking beyond their traditional sectors for complementary businesses that can provide new revenue streams and access to new customers.

Shoprite’s move also demonstrates how established companies can use existing infrastructure, supply chains and customer networks to enter adjacent markets.

The acquisition of Vida e Caffè remains subject to the required conditions and regulatory approval before completion.
