A new chapter for the CLA

The vehicle measures around 4.72 metres in length, giving it a substantial presence while retaining the sleek, coupé-inspired profile that has become a defining characteristic of the CLA.

The result is a car that looks unmistakably like a Mercedes-Benz, but with a more futuristic interpretation of the brand’s design language.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa currently describes the new CLA as offering a powerful, sporty exterior design, a new interior environment and its MBUX Superscreen display concept.

Up to 792km of claimed range

One of the biggest talking points is efficiency.

The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology uses an approximately 85kWh battery and a single electric motor mounted at the rear axle. It produces 200kW and 335Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of up to 792km under the applicable test cycle.

That figure places the CLA among the most ambitious electric vehicles in its class when it comes to claimed driving range.

Of course, real-world range will vary according to factors such as speed, temperature, driving style, terrain, traffic and use of the vehicle’s climate-control system.

For South African buyers, however, a long claimed range could be particularly attractive given the distances involved in many intercity journeys.

800-volt technology and rapid charging

Range is only part of the electric-car equation.

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the new CLA with an 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing it to take advantage of very high-speed DC charging.

Under suitable charging conditions, Mercedes-Benz says the CLA can add up to 325km of range in approximately 10 minutes.

That is potentially important for long-distance travel because charging stops can become much shorter when the appropriate high-power charging infrastructure is available.

The system also incorporates intelligent energy management designed to maximise efficiency.

The CLA 250+ isn’t the only electric version

Mercedes-Benz also offers the more powerful CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology.

While the CLA 250+ uses a single rear-mounted electric motor, the CLA 350 adds a second motor to the front axle, giving it all-wheel drive through Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC system.

The CLA 350 4MATIC produces 260kW and 515Nm, with a claimed 0–100km/h time of around 4.8–4.9 seconds, depending on the specification and source. Its claimed WLTP range reaches up to approximately 771km.

Both electric versions have a claimed top speed of 210km/h.

For buyers who want an EV that combines efficiency with genuine performance, the CLA 350 4MATIC makes the electric transition considerably more interesting.

A technology showcase inside

The new CLA’s technology story continues inside the cabin.

Higher-specification versions feature Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX Superscreen, bringing multiple digital displays together across the dashboard. The configuration can include a digital instrument display, a central touchscreen and an additional passenger display.

Mercedes-Benz is also introducing its new MB.OS operating system, which represents a major shift in the company’s approach to vehicle software.

The system is designed to support advanced connectivity, navigation, entertainment and vehicle functions while allowing software improvements to be delivered over time.

Artificial intelligence also plays a role, with the latest MBUX system incorporating conversational capabilities and Google Gemini technology for selected functions and markets.

In other words, the new CLA is increasingly being designed as a software-defined vehicle rather than simply a car with a large touchscreen.

Aerodynamics are central to the CLA’s efficiency

The CLA’s sleek shape isn’t only about appearance.

Aerodynamics play a major role in helping an electric vehicle travel further between charges.

The low-slung body, smooth surfaces and carefully shaped details are designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, helping the electric powertrain use less energy at speed.

Mercedes-Benz’s focus on efficiency is reflected in its official figures for the CLA 250+, which list combined energy consumption of approximately 12.2–14.1kWh/100km, depending on specification and testing conditions.

That efficiency is one of the reasons Mercedes-Benz can target such a long claimed range from the battery.

More space and practicality

Although the CLA retains its sleek coupé-sedan character, the new generation has also been designed to provide more usable space.

The electric architecture creates packaging advantages because there is no conventional combustion engine occupying the front engine bay.

The electric CLA therefore gains additional storage space under the bonnet, with reports putting the front storage compartment at around 101–110 litres, depending on the specification/source.

That makes the car more practical for everyday use than its low-slung styling might initially suggest.

What does this mean for South Africa?

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has confirmed the new CLA for the local market and has already introduced the new-generation CLA family locally. The electric CLA is part of Mercedes-Benz’s broader 2026 product strategy, although local specifications and pricing for the electric versions should be confirmed with Mercedes-Benz South Africa rather than assumed from overseas markets.

At the time of writing, Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s online configurator publicly lists the CLA range and pricing for combustion-powered models, but does not provide a confirmed retail price for the electric CLA 250+ or CLA 350 4MATIC.

That means South African buyers interested in the electric model should check with an authorised Mercedes-Benz retailer for local availability, specifications and pricing.

The bigger picture

The new CLA is important beyond its individual specifications.

Mercedes-Benz is using the model to demonstrate a new philosophy: electric and hybrid versions can share a common design identity and underlying architecture rather than existing as completely separate product families.

That approach is already visible in the company’s new-generation product strategy, where the MMA platform is designed to accommodate electric and combustion-powered vehicles.

It also represents a departure from Mercedes-Benz’s previous approach of giving many electric models their own EQ identities and separate designs.

The new CLA instead looks like a Mercedes-Benz CLA — just one designed from the ground up for an electric future.

Is the electric CLA a serious contender?

On paper, absolutely.

The combination of a claimed range of up to 792km, 800-volt charging, 200kW of power, rear-wheel drive, advanced software and a premium interior makes the CLA 250+ a compelling proposition.

The CLA 350 4MATIC takes the formula further by adding all-wheel drive and 260kW of combined power.

The bigger question for South Africa will be price, charging infrastructure and availability.

As the local electric-vehicle market develops, buyers will increasingly look beyond battery size and ask practical questions: How far can I travel between charges? How quickly can I recharge? Where can I charge? And what does ownership cost over several years?

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA has been engineered to answer at least some of those questions with impressive numbers.
