iPhone Duo: Apple Finally Enters the Foldable Phone Race

iPhone Duo is finally here, marking Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market.

Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone on 9 September 2026, introducing a device that combines the familiar iPhone experience with a dramatically larger folding display.

The announcement puts Apple into a market where competitors including Samsung, Huawei and other manufacturers have already spent years experimenting with foldable smartphones.

But Apple is betting that its combination of hardware, software and ecosystem can make the iPhone Duo different.

And yes, Apple has officially gone foldable.

Meet the iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design.

When closed, users get a 5.4-inch outer display that is designed to remain compact enough for everyday use.

Open the device and that screen becomes a much larger 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display.

According to Apple, the inner display is the largest display ever fitted to an iPhone. The company has also designed the two displays with matching aspect ratios so content can transition between them more naturally.

That means users can use the phone like a conventional smartphone when it is closed and then open it when they need more screen space.

Think multitasking, watching videos, browsing, gaming and working on documents โ€” all without carrying a separate tablet.

Apple wants you to do more than just fold it

The interesting part of the iPhone Duo isn’t simply that it folds.

Apple has redesigned elements of iOS 27 around the device’s different positions.

The company says the phone can be used in different orientations, including for hands-free video calls and flexible viewing.

The software can also support side-by-side apps, making the larger inner display more useful for productivity.

Apple’s developer documentation shows that applications can adapt between the two displays as the device opens and closes.

That could be one of Apple’s biggest advantages.

A foldable phone can have impressive hardware, but if the software experience feels awkward, the novelty can wear off quickly.

Apple is clearly trying to make the folding mechanism part of the everyday iPhone experience.

A20 Pro brings the power

Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip.

Apple says the chip features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine, with hardware designed to handle demanding applications and AI workloads.

The company has also built a custom thermal management system with a vapour chamber.

That’s important because foldable phones have to balance a thin design with the heat generated by modern processors, cameras, gaming and artificial intelligence.

Apple claims the A20 Pro delivers up to 20% faster six-core CPU performance than the A19 Pro, while offering increased memory bandwidth.

For consumers, the practical question will be whether that power translates into noticeable improvements in everyday use.

The cameras haven’t been forgotten

Foldable phones aren’t usually bought just for their cameras, but Apple has still given the Duo a serious imaging system.

The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, consisting of:

  • 48MP Fusion Main camera
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
  • 12MP Center Stage front camera
  • Under-display FaceTime camera

The phone supports up to 2x optical-quality zoom and can record video at up to 4K at 120 frames per second.

Apple has also introduced features designed specifically around the folding form factor.

One of them is Duo Preview, which allows people being photographed to see a live preview on the outer display.

There’s also Smart Take, designed to automatically capture a photo when everyone is ready.

In other words, Apple isn’t treating the folding display as just a bigger screen โ€” it is using the design to create new camera experiences.

Battery life gets a major rethink

One of the biggest challenges with foldable smartphones is battery life.

Apple has addressed this with what it calls an iPhone-first dual-battery architecture.

The company says the iPhone Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours when using the outer display.

Apple also says fast wired charging can take the device to 50% in around 20 minutes under its specified charging conditions.

The device is also eSIM-only worldwide, meaning there is no physical SIM card slot.

That could be particularly relevant for travellers and users who regularly switch between mobile networks.

What does it look like?

The iPhone Duo is available in Star White and Night Sky.

Apple has used a titanium construction and designed a precision hinge for the folding mechanism.

The device is also rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, while Apple says the hinge and display have been engineered for durability.

When open, the phone measures just 5.2mm thick, according to Apple’s specifications.

It weighs 254 grams.

For comparison, that’s considerably more substantial than a traditional smartphone, but users are getting a tablet-sized display that folds into a much smaller package.

And then there’s the price

Here’s where things get interesting.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for the 256GB model.

Storage options include:

  • 256GB
  • 512GB
  • 1TB
  • 2TB

The device is positioned firmly at the premium end of the smartphone market.

Apple’s official regional information says the iPhone Duo will be available in more than 70 countries and regions from 23 October 2026, with pre-orders beginning 16 October in those markets.

For South African consumers, availability and local pricing should be confirmed through Apple’s South African availability channels and authorised retailers rather than assuming the US price converts directly to rand.

Is Apple late to the foldable party?

Yes.

There is no getting around it.

Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers have been selling foldable devices for years.

But Apple rarely needs to be first.

The company’s strategy has traditionally been to enter established product categories and attempt to make the experience feel simpler, more polished and more integrated with its ecosystem.

The iPhone Duo represents Apple’s biggest change to the iPhone’s physical design in years.

And because the iPhone remains such an important part of Apple’s business, the success or failure of this product will be closely watched across the technology industry.

What it could mean for South African consumers

For South African smartphone users, the iPhone Duo could make foldable phones more mainstream.

Until now, consumers interested in foldable devices have had relatively limited choices depending on their preferred ecosystem, network and budget.

Apple’s arrival could increase competition in the premium foldable market.

It could also push other manufacturers to compete more aggressively on design, cameras, software and durability.

But the biggest question for South African consumers may ultimately be much simpler:

Is a foldable iPhone worth the money?

At this price level, the answer will depend heavily on how much value users place on the larger screen, multitasking capabilities, Apple ecosystem and the novelty of having a phone that transforms into something closer to a mini tablet.

Apple has opened a new chapter

The iPhone Duo is more than another annual iPhone upgrade.

It represents Apple’s decision to move the iPhone into a completely different form factor.

The company has combined a 7.6-inch folding display, A20 Pro processing, a 48MP dual-camera system, Apple Intelligence and redesigned iOS experiences into a device that can change shape depending on what the user needs.

Whether foldables become the future of smartphones remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain:

Apple has finally entered the race.

And now that Apple is playing, the foldable smartphone battle is about to get a lot more interesting.
