Gabriel Jesus joins Barcelona from Arsenal in deadline-day transfer

Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus has completed his move from Arsenal to Barcelona, signing a contract with the Spanish champions until June 2029.

Gabriel Jesus has completed a surprise transfer from Arsenal to Barcelona on deadline day, bringing his four-year spell in North London to an end.

The 29-year-old Brazilian forward has signed a three-year contract with Barcelona, with the Spanish champions reportedly paying around €10 million (£8.6 million) for his services.

The move was confirmed by both clubs on Tuesday as Barcelona moved to strengthen their attack ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Barcelona turn to Gabriel Jesus

Barcelona had spent much of the summer pursuing Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez but were unable to reach an agreement for the Argentine forward.

The Catalan club subsequently turned to Jesus, securing a player with extensive Premier League and Champions League experience.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick welcomed the opportunity to add the Brazilian to his squad, describing Jesus as a player whose style fits the team’s approach.

The forward also arrives at a time when Barcelona are reshaping their attack following the departure of experienced striker Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Jesus said joining Barcelona represented the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition.

He previously acknowledged that he had the opportunity to move to the club earlier in his career, but circumstances took him in a different direction.

Now, almost a decade later, he gets the chance to wear the famous Barcelona colours.

A new chapter after Arsenal

Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in July 2022 in a deal worth around £45 million.

He made 123 appearances for the Gunners and scored 32 goals, while also contributing to the club’s successful Premier League campaign last season.

His time at Arsenal was, however, disrupted by injuries, particularly a serious knee injury suffered in January 2025.

The injury kept him out for a significant period and affected his position in Arsenal’s attacking pecking order.

By the beginning of the new season, Jesus found himself behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in the competition for attacking positions. He made only three Premier League starts last season.

The Barcelona move therefore gives the Brazilian an opportunity to restart his career at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

From Manchester City to Barcelona

Before joining Arsenal, Jesus enjoyed a highly successful six-year spell at Manchester City.

He scored 95 goals in 236 appearances for the club and won four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

His arrival at Barcelona means he returns to a club competing at the highest level of European football, bringing experience of winning major domestic trophies.

Jesus has also represented Brazil 64 times, although he has not played for the national team since November 2023.

A successful campaign in Spain could give him another opportunity to push his way back into the international picture.

Jesus offers Barcelona versatility in attack.

Although primarily a forward, he has demonstrated throughout his career that he can operate in different attacking positions and contribute both as a goalscorer and a creator.

The Brazilian also brings experience of playing in high-pressure environments, having competed for major honours with Manchester City and Arsenal.

For Jesus, however, the move is about more than adding another club to an already impressive career.

Arsenal say goodbye
