Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover Brings Free Outdoor Workouts to Bedfordview
Bedford Shopping Centre and Planet Fitness are turning a parking deck into a free fitness space on 3 October, with yoga, workouts, dance, prizes and a community donation drive.
Johannesburg is getting an unusual new fitness venue this spring as Bedford Shopping Centre and Planet Fitness prepare to transform Bedford’s open-air parking deck into an outdoor workout space.
The Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover takes place on Saturday, 3 October 2026, giving the Bedfordview community the chance to swap the traditional gym floor for fresh air, music, movement and a morning of fitness.
The free event will be held on the open deck parking area between Entrances 1 and 2 at Bedford Shopping Centre.
Registration opens at 7:30am, with the first session getting underway at 8:00am.
Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover: What to Expect
The Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover has been designed as a morning of different fitness experiences, meaning participants don’t need to stick to one type of workout.
The programme will begin with a yoga session, giving participants an opportunity to ease into the morning before the intensity increases.
Planet Fitness will then lead its high-energy PF20 workout, followed by a hybrid and dance session to bring the morning to a lively finish.
The combination is aimed at making the event accessible to people with different interests and fitness levels.
Whether you’re already active, returning to exercise or simply looking for something different to do on a Saturday morning, the organisers are encouraging the community to join.
You Don’t Have to Be a Planet Fitness Member
One of the biggest attractions of the event is that you don’t need a Planet Fitness membership to participate.
The free morning is open to people of all fitness levels.
That means experienced gym-goers can use the event as another opportunity to train, while people who don’t normally visit a gym can try a selection of classes in a more relaxed outdoor environment.
The rooftop setting is also intended to give the morning a different atmosphere from a conventional indoor fitness class.
With the event taking place in spring, participants will be able to exercise outdoors while enjoying music and the energy of a group workout.

R20,000 in Prizes Up for Grabs
There will also be some extra motivation for those taking part.
Bedford Shopping Centre stores are contributing prizes worth a combined R20,000, giving participants the opportunity to win while taking part in the morning’s activities.
Everyone who attends will also receive a goodie bag containing discount vouchers from participating Bedford stores.
The prizes and vouchers add a shopping-centre element to an event that is otherwise focused on fitness and community.
Bring Your Pre-Loved Fitness Gear
The Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover will also have a community-focused element.
Attendees are encouraged to bring pre-loved gym shoes and fitness clothing that they no longer use.
The donated items will be collected and given to people in need, helping unused fitness equipment find a new purpose.
For organisers, the donation drive is intended to make the event about more than simply getting people active for one morning.
It also gives participants a practical way to support others in their community while taking part in the event.
Bedfordview Gets Moving This Spring
Linda Linnow, General Manager of Bedford, says the event is intended to create an opportunity for people to get active together in an unexpected part of the shopping centre.
โSpring is such a great time to get outdoors and get moving,โ says Linnow.
She adds that participants don’t need to be extremely fit or belong to a gym to enjoy the event.
The message is simple: come along, try a class, have some fun and, where possible, bring something to donate.

The Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover offers Bedfordview residents something a little different this spring: a free morning combining fitness, music, dance, shopping-centre prizes and an opportunity to give back.
And with the workout taking place on a rooftop rather than inside a gym, it could be one of the more unusual ways to start a Saturday morning in Bedfordview.
