Liverpool Come From Behind to Beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 in Champions League Opener
Liverpool have made a winning start to their Champions League campaign after coming from behind to defeat Atlético Madrid 2–1 at Anfield.
The Reds fell behind in the first half but responded with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to turn the match around and secure three valuable points.
It was also an important night for new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, who celebrated his first Champions League victory as a coach.
Atlético strike first
Liverpool started their European campaign in front of 59,466 supporters at Anfield, but it was the visitors who made the breakthrough.
Marcos Llorente gave Atlético Madrid the lead in the 17th minute after receiving an assist from Julián Álvarez.
The goal meant Liverpool had to chase the game, but the Reds gradually grew into the contest.
Atlético’s early advantage also meant Liverpool had to show the kind of character that has already become a feature of their start to the season.
Szoboszlai brings Liverpool level
Liverpool eventually found their response just before half-time.
A clever flick from Ronald Araújo created the opportunity for Dominik Szoboszlai, who finished from close range in the 40th minute.
The goal changed the mood around Anfield and gave Liverpool renewed momentum going into the second half.
The two teams went into the interval level at 1–1.
And Liverpool were not finished.
Mac Allister produces the winner
Just five minutes into the second half, Liverpool completed the comeback.
Alexis Mac Allister picked up the ball following a ricochet after Rio Ngumoha delivered into the area.
The Argentine midfielder then unleashed a superb strike from around 20 yards, sending the ball inside the left post to put Liverpool ahead.
Liverpool 2–1 Atlético Madrid.
The goal ultimately proved to be the winner.
For Mac Allister, it was an especially important contribution on a night when his future at Liverpool had been the subject of recent contract discussion. His answer came on the pitch.
Barcola makes his Liverpool debut
There was also considerable attention on Liverpool’s new signing Bradley Barcola, who made his first start for the club in the Champions League.
The French winger showed flashes of his pace and attacking ability but was substituted around the hour mark after appearing to suffer from cramp.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola later indicated that the problem was not considered a serious injury.
Barcola’s arrival adds another attacking option to a Liverpool squad that already includes players such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool show their resilience
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the victory was Liverpool’s ability to respond after falling behind.
The Reds have now shown a willingness to fight their way back into matches, and Wednesday’s victory was another example.
The official Liverpool match report described the result as a 2–1 comeback victory, with Szoboszlai and Mac Allister scoring either side of half-time.
For a team beginning a new European campaign under Iraola, that resilience could prove important as the season develops.
Ronald Araújo impresses
One of Liverpool’s standout performers was Ronald Araújo, who was voted the club’s Player of the Match by supporters.
The defender played at right-back and also produced the important flick that helped create Szoboszlai’s equaliser.
His performance provided another positive from a match in which Liverpool had to defend their lead against a determined Atlético side.
A winning start to Europe’s new league phase
The victory gives Liverpool three points from their opening Champions League fixture.
The Reds will now prepare for their next European assignment, an away trip to LASK of Austria next month.
Before then, Liverpool return to domestic action.
Their next Premier League fixture is against Fulham at Anfield on Saturday, 12 September.
That gives Iraola and his players little time to celebrate before attention turns back to the Premier League.
Liverpool’s message to Europe
A new manager.
A new-look squad.
A new Champions League campaign.

Liverpool may not have started Wednesday’s match in perfect fashion, but they finished it with three points.
